Touge races, sometimes called Battles, are typically run at night between 2 cars in either "Cat and mouse" or Initial D rules. However, street racing competition can lead to more people racing on a given road than would ordinarily be permitted (hence leading to the reputation of inherent danger). Examples of such roads include Del Dios Highway in Escondido, California Genting Sempah in Malaysia Highway 35 Some portions of British Columbia Highway 1 such as the Malahat drive and Mount Haruna, on the island of Honshū, in Japan. Tōge – Japanese for "mountain pass", because these races are held on mountain roads and passes – generally refers to racing, one car at a time or in a chase format, through mountain passes (the definition of which varies per locale and racing organization). The sport of drifting and tōge (also transcribed touge) racing, primarily from Japan, has led to its acceptance in other parts of the world. Some car meets are held at closed circuits such as Sonic Automotive circuits (Atlanta Motor Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway host such events during the year.) This is usually to prevent getting the attention of local law enforcement, as meets can easily gain attention. While some car meets may involve street racing, many meets may recommend not to race at all during the meets. This can often mean something like a large abandoned parking lot, a sizeable location they specifically asked for permission to use, or other locations that are known to be car enthusiast-friendly where they are welcomed. In its simplest form, "car meets" can be described as gatherings by car enthusiasts and street racers alike with the sole purpose of taking their passions into the public eye. Street racing is distinct from the legal and governed sport of drag racing see terminology below. Opponents of street racing claim street races have a lack of safety relative to sanctioned racing events, as well as legal repercussions arising from incidents, among street racing's drawbacks. Well-coordinated races are planned in advance and often have people communicating via two-way radios or citizens' band radio, and using police scanners and GPS units to mark locations where local police are more prevalent. Street racing can either be spontaneous or well planned and coordinated. Though typically taking place in uncrowded highways on city outskirts or in the countryside, some races are held in large industrial complexes. Since a private racing venue was not always available, street races would be held illegally on public roads. In the United States, modern street racing traces its roots back to Woodward Avenue, Michigan, in the 1960s when the three main Detroit-based American car companies were producing high-powered performance cars. ![]() Since then, it continues to be both popular and hazardous, with deaths of bystanders, passengers, and drivers occurring every year. It became especially prevalent during the heyday of hot rodding (1960s), muscle cars (1970s), Japanese imports (1990s) and sports cars (2000s). Racing in the streets is considered an ancient hazard, as horse racing occurred on streets for centuries, and street racing in automobiles is likely as old as the automobile itself. Street racing is typically an unsanctioned and illegal form of auto racing that occurs on a public road. The club is looking forward to exploring new specimens in the future. Last year, Anatomy & Dissection Club dissected a full squid and a pig heart. “Making the slides and doing research on the anatomy of the specimen we study is much more fun than reading a textbook.” “My favorite part about being in the club is to dissect, of course, and learn anatomy with others,” Club President Einez Wu ‘23 said. Most club members joined Anatomy and Dissection Club due to an interest in biology – as well as to get hands-on experience in observing and exploring animal organs. Other than that, I feel like people enjoyed themselves and it went pretty good,” Larina said. So we’re going to take steps to improve upon that. “I feel like we need to use a little bit less technical terminology directing the dissection because people felt a little bit lost. Although club members were given the freedom to handle the dissection themselves, officers walked around to answer questions and provide help when needed. This year, the club tried out a self-paced format for the first time, providing members with a slideshow of instructions and information, including diagrams of the brain’s anatomy. ![]() The officers do an excellent job and create the dissection slides and guide the group during the meetings. “Not all students can fit science classes with dissections into their schedules, the club gives students exposure to dissecting both common and uncommon specimens. To do that you have to stay out of the police force's sight and try to one-up rival bosses in both business and territory control. The dominance of some strategies over others undermines what should otherwise be a wide-open sandbox game. All of that goes on as you build up your network of illegal breweries, casinos, speakeasies, and brothels to get rich on the management side. It's an honest crime that you can't vault over the bar counters into cover like in every gangster movie ever. The terrain is static as well: there’s no destruction, and no interesting ways for characters to get around. ![]() Most fights end up revolving around a single corner or doorway as you set up a kill zone and watch enemies swarm into it – and many of the maps only have one or two of those chokepoints to fight over. They're pretty, at least, thanks to locations like dim speakeasy interiors and luxurious gambling houses, but they’re chokepointed, poorly laid out, and offer very little tactical variety. ![]() It's the maps that really kill the combat. There are balance issues, like one-hit kills from sniper rifles and surprise damage from unavoidable dynamite attacks, but there's fun at the tactical core. There's also a half-or-full-cover system you'll recognize from every tactics game since 2012, well implemented here, with angle of attack and distance mattering depending on what weapon you're using: a shotgun does best from within two tiles, a rifle from seven or more, and a submachine gun is happiest somewhere in the middle. It's just enough randomness to make the weapon stats and upgraded rarities really matter. Basic combat numbers are pretty granular, with health in the 50-150 range, so a thug might take two to four pistol shots to go down. The tactical battles are built on good bones: Gangsters have a to-hit stat, hit points, and you find weapons with varied stats. Interacting with the characters of the '20s is where Empire of Sin shines, but the fights you're doing to earn those stories quickly become rote due to mindlessly repetitive maps and poor, buggy combat AI. Those might be fights with rival gangs, groups of independent thugs, and very occasionally even the police or the Bureau of Prohibition's agents. You direct your chosen gang boss around the city, doing missions with bits of flavorful dialogue to enjoy and controlling a crew of hired guns in battles against other gangsters. Like many of Empire of Sin’s ideas, it's a brilliant concept: You have to keep a lot of violent people with poor impulse control both happy and alive in turn-based tactical RPG combat in the vein of XCOM. (They're in love.) The charm wore off a lot quicker than I’d have liked, though.įights quickly become rote due to mindlessly repetitive maps and poor, buggy combat AI.The challenge here is to run a complex illegal empire while also balancing the chaotic personalities of criminals both in your gang and outside it. There's even really delightfully over-the-top voice acting for nearly every character, littered with standout performances like gangster boss Frankie Donovan, aged Western sharpshooter Grover Monks, or the hammy duo performance of a gambling bookie and a button man. The writing and weird cast of characters, both fictional and fictionalized alike, have a lot of charm. For what it’s worth, Empire of Sin really embraces the Roaring ‘20s style, showing off Chicago streets that are initially fun to navigate and a roaring soundtrack of jazz mixed with some more modern pieces. ![]() ![]() A clock tower whose grinding gears keep switching the perspective. ![]() A micro-scale bonus level set in a swirling tea-cup. Castle of Illusion isn’t close to Rayman-level artistry, but its looks and personality easily earn its Disney logo. Everything benefits from great art and at least a little 3D though, with flat routes now able to curve around towers, follow train tracks, and other well-implemented effects. Older segments be can a mite bland if you have no emotional connection to their original versions, but the new stuff around them is surprisingly seamless. The actual game is a strange mix of old and new, with lots of specific level design copied outright, but expanded on every axis – the action mostly being 2D with polygons instead of sprites, but with the camera regularly zooming out into the third-dimension proper for bonuses, some set-pieces, bosses, and the Castle itself, which has now been upgraded from a few humble doors to a shameless copy of Peach’s place from Super Mario 64. Unlike the intrusive story of Duck Tales Remastered though, CoI’s plays behind the action rather than constantly interrupting it, and the narrator shuts up when returning to levels to sweep for collectibles. And, well, that’s about it, with the added detail in this remake limited to little more than a narrator on hand to constantly add comments like “Mickey bravely continued through the castle.” This narration can get irritating after a failed jump too many on a specific section, and contributes little. Mickey of course races to rescue her, content from the title of this game that at least he knows exactly which castle his princess will be in. The premise (“plot” would be a little strong), is that Minnie gets captured by the witch Mizrabel – the Queen from Snow White working under a different name – to have her youth and beauty siphoned off. |
